A great new hang on Hawthorne. Swanky and hip, yet easy going and neighborhood friendly. Fantastic happy hour runs long. A new favorite, for sure.

Pravda Review by Dawn K (04-23-2008)
Gabriela was wonderful! I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my hair when I came in. She helped me find a hairstyle that would work for me and work with my hair! I love it and I can't wait to go back and get some highlights!

The Institute is a great place to pamper yourself. The treatment is professional, courteous and wonderful! The students work closely with teachers to assure you are happy with the treatment. The prices are great and you're helping out the School. 50.00? for all that? Wonderful! Thanks!

Pop Culture Frozen Yogurt Review by David Small (03-31-2008)
Some people bring back the personal touch. I like the way Pop Culture is sharing a guilt free treat. Fresh and tasty is what comes to mind. I would recommend it!

Pravda Review by Nate (03-15-2008)
Vanya is great! I have left other stylists because they don't cut how I want, but Vanya listens. She is able to use her expertise to give a great cut while following at time vague instructions.

The treatment is perfect- how can you pass up a haircut that includes a shoulder and neck massage? I would recommend Pravda salon to anybody looking for a top-quality, professional, personalized experience.

McMenamins Back Stage Bar Review by Alex (02-20-2008)
Back Stage is a great bar to meet a group of friends, have some drinks, and play a game of pool. The space is enormous! The jukebox is stocked with good tunes and the beer is ever so tasty. Check out the upper rooms for a more cozy atmosphere. Oh! I almost forgot... there's a full size snooker table if that's more to your liking.

Amorice Skin Care-Massage and Body Review by Bura Kora Voda (02-19-2008)
Finally! Someone who understands my eyebrows! I have a hard time with my eyebrows and you can't put a price on good eyebrows. I was referred to Amorice because of Raquel's unique craft of eyebrow design. I had a trip to plan for, which I had a salt glow, full leg and bikini wax, followed by a "delightful" salt glow. I was so excited for my vacation, I got much more then I expected.

Maison Inc. Review by BeanLogic (02-18-2008)
This shop is full of unique things and it's like a new discovery every time I stop in. I love that the designers find great furniture and restore it to perfect condition. I love the idea of breathing new life into vintage finds. There is nothing quite like it in the Pearl.

Pravda Review by Raquel (01-30-2008)
Vonna has been coloring my hair for the last year, I have been impressed with the product used,Schwarzkopf. It would be hard to match such a great hair color. Vonna is an experienced hairstyles with a trusting eye. I would recommend Pravda for a positive hair experience.

Amorice Skin Care-Massage and Body Review by Laniellle "elle" (01-27-2008)
I was just in town for a few days and was referred to amorice from a local that was waiting on me, I found this to be really close to my services in Boston. The atmosphere was clean and cozy. Most importantly my facial was amazing! It topped off the visit to Portland.
I would see Racquel again.

Pravda Review by Tawnya Nance (01-24-2008)
Gabriela is the best stylist that I have ever encountered. She is the only one who has gotten the highlights, in my hair to be a true carmel color versus red or brassy. I receive compliments EVERY time I am out, in our beautiful Portland!

Cup and Saucer Northeast Review by heatherrr (01-23-2008)
I like this location much better than the one on Hawthorne...the food at the Hawth location has waned in quality and quality over the years and is always crowded.

Killingsworth's C and S has the very best breakfast potatoes with roasted garlic...mmmm yum! My favorite is the lucky scramble. *drool*

Amorice Skin Care-Massage and Body Review by Shawn (01-14-2008)
Raquel is great! She is funny and thoughtful and her office is small and charming with a very warm feeling. I think that there is no one better to wax your @#!%& or give you a facial. Go Amorice or go to hell. :)

Moxie Review by Mona (01-12-2008)
Moxie is my favorite store in Portland! They carry a lot of local and one-of-a-kind items that no one else has. The people that work there are very nice and helpful.

Rockin' Roxy's Dog Stop Review by Manon (12-24-2007)
Roxy's is really clean and well-staffed by people who love and actually play with the dogs and pay attention to their personalities and behaviors. The staff are warm and welcoming to people and their dogs, and they are flexible about day care hours. Our pooch comes home happy and exhausted from playing with her friends, and gets more exercise and stimulation there than we can provide on our work days. Roxy's has been a life saver for us all.

Pizza A Go Go Review by David (12-18-2007)

Alba Osteria Review by David Dunning (11-30-2007)
This place is spectacular. Not your typical Italian restaurant, which is nothing against them, just that this place is in a class of its own. Pricey, but when the food comes, you'll understand. We don't have the budget to go there except on special occasions, but every meal we've had there has been memorable. Professional, knowledgeable service, dishes you're unlikely to find anywhere else, and my companions who know wine have been impressed with the wine list. A hidden gem, and definitely a keeper.

Muddy Rudder Public House Review by David Dunning (11-30-2007)
This is a very comfy and homey neighborhood joint. A very appealing pub menu with creative sandwiches and salads and the like. Very friendly staff. Excellent selections on tap. I've only been here once so far, but I definitely want to get back.

Art Endeavors Review by Martha (11-28-2007)
I walked into the store one day just to check it out. I was immediately attracted to the batik shirts with the bike stencil on it. They didn't have my size but Rin (artist/owner) worked with me, finding a plain white shirt that was my size and basically took a custom order for me, promising to make it the colors I wanted with the bike stencil print, even adding a few curly q's that I liked. The shirt was done within a few days and the end product was beautiful!!! I now have a beautiful hand made purple batik Portland bike shirt. I love it!

If you have gifts to buy this holiday season (or anytime!) check out Rin's place, Art Endeavors. You won't be disappointed and I'm sure you'll find something wonderful to gift someone with!

Support your local artists and buy local! :)

Costello's Travel Cafe Review by Helen Wheels (10-31-2007)
I live walking distance from Costello's Travel Caffe. We frequent this locally owned cafe. They have excellent homemade food and pastries. This is a comfortable place to hangout with neighbors, use your laptop and listen to music or watch a movie. They also have groups who meet weekly for foreign language conversation.

Cadillac Cafe Review by Helen Wheels (10-31-2007)
I live walking distance from this restaurant and never eat here. I won't say why, but if you respect the working class, you won't eat here either.

Broadway Books Review by Helen Wheels (10-31-2007)
I live walking distance from Broadway Books. This is definitely the best independent book store in NE Portland - and I'm not saying that just because one of the owners is a friend of
mine. You can pick up new hardbacks, recently released paperback editions. There are permanent sections of quality fiction, mystery, poetry, memoirs, biography, natural resources, travel, religion, politics, current events, children's books, graphic novels, anime, gay & lesbian, women's, philosophy, cooking, sale items, used books - and this is a partial list. The store is not huge, so everything is quality.

If you love books, love to read or peruse them, this is the store for you. Broadway Books gift wraps for free and also stocks greeting cards and wrapping paper. This is a fantastic store that is a Portland must visit. It's not just for tourists or shoppers in the neighborhood, you will run into genuine, longtime, book-loving Portlanders. The owners actually live in Portland, too.

Tiger Tiger Review by Tara S. (10-10-2007)
I just recently got the best haircut of my life from Alisa the owner, of Tiger Tiger. I like my hair long, but it never had any style to it. She just looked at me quietly for about a minute, and then said " I know what to do". She gave me the cutest long hair style ever. I don't blow dry or use hair products and it doesn't matter - it still looks great!! Go to her if you want a great style but don't know exactly what to do..
THANKS ALISA!!

Pravda Review by Lydia (08-28-2007)
Gabriela, the owner and a stylist at Pravda, is the top in hair
styling in Portland. She combines European style and professionalism
with American warmth and years of experience. I left myself in her
hands and ended up with a great cut. When I asked what she thought
about bangs (I have curly hair, so you'll understand that this is a
risk...) we talked about the cut and she showed exactly how to care
for and style them. I've gotten so many compliments on my haircut!

Furthermore, she has an excellent line of products that don't have any
chemical or artificial flowery smell. She shows you just how to use
them, where and the amount. However, she's not at all pushy in her
approach to selling them, which sets her apart from many salons, and
they are indeed top of the line.

Pravda Salon itself is cozy -I wouldn't say small- and with its two
chairs it lends itself to a very convivial atmosphere that you can't
get in the larger salons which push the number of people passing
through its chairs rather than quality and time on good haircuts.
Pravda is like a fine restaurant which cares as much about your
experience and the artistry of the food rather than maximizing
customers.

I did a lot of research before I decided on Pravda for my next
haircut. I asked around, walked in and spoke with stylists and read a
lot of the reviews on Citysearch. Pravda Salon was everything its
reviewers claimed it to be and more; now I recommend Gabriela to all
my friends.

Art Endeavors Review by Robyn Shanti (08-15-2007)
The Sleeping Bee is a wonderful gallery space that features the whimsical, magical, radiant art of Rin Carroll Jackson. One cannot help but leave with a smile after looking at all the creativity emanating from these walls....psychedelic hoola hoops, beautiful funky batik t-shirts and wall hangings, multi-media painted collages, hand decorated candle holders and of course bees! The attention to detail, vibrant colors and whimsical feel of her art expressed in so many mediums guarantees that you can find a gift for anyone or an art piece to wear or give a special place in your home.

Art Endeavors Review by Dimitri Munkirs (06-24-2007)
I highly recommend Rin's artwork if you are looking for unique, quality gifts. The Batik shirts I ordered for Christmas were a HUGE hit! I loved them so much I asked Rin to design Batik shirts for our company, and we've had lots of people ask where they could get one. Thanks so much for the excellent work and for being such a pleasure to work with.

All the Best,
Dimitri

Art Endeavors Review by Won (06-08-2007)
Fantastic gallery. Friendly environment, great conversations, warm spirits and beautiful art. There's definitely something for everyone. I think I'm hooked on her batik clothing and buying gifts from her gallery. The studio/gallery integration provides an insight I rarely get. Check it out!

Art Endeavors Review by Nancy Bell (06-07-2007)
My first introduction to Rin's talent was a tee shirt given to me by my daughter. It was a batik with my favortie-a frog- on it. I visited her shop and fell in love with her print "Four Seasons." It is now hanging on a wall where it is the first thing I see when I wake up. The picture brightens my day! I have added to my collection of Rin's tee shirts, and, with Rin's help, designed special shirts for my four grandchildren. I took my best friend in when we were visiting Portland and she ordered tee shirts for her trhee grandchildren and herself. Everytime I wear one of my shirts, someone will comment on how great it looks. Thanks, Rin, for sharing your talents. Nancy, Sugar Land, Texas

savory atmosphere, sweet staff...It has become my personal mission to hop on this airstream and do a tour de all the crepes on the menu... though I've recently got hung up at a lemon curd & raspberry pit stop. (so tasty I have to refrain from licking the plate... but sometimes I cant :)
Funky fun atmosphere with an exceptionally nice staff.

Saint Honore' Bakery Review by (04-18-2007)
I love this place. A little bit of Paris right in NW Portland. Come early for lunch, the line goes right out the door. And good luck with finding a parking space. It is well worth it.

Eyes on Broadway Review by Sandy (04-16-2007)
I had such a wonderful experience at Eyes on Broadway - I've never had such a thorough eye exam and more knowledgeable opticians helping me pick out my glasses. I got the coolest glasses and I get compliments ALL the time.

Amalfis Italian Restaurant Review by Danielle (04-12-2007)
Wow!! I've been all over the states and have never had better pizza than Amalfi's. Their pasta, paninis & baked dishes are also awesome. One of the last restaurants that still offer soup/salad,bread and ice cream with your entree. Be prepared and come hungry because the portions are huge!!

When Pigs Fly Review by Terry Devane (04-06-2007)
This whimsical shop in the heart of quaint Beaumont Village, puts Portland gift shopping in a whole new league. There is nothing traditional or conventional here. It is outrageous, vibrant, funky, and most of all humorous. You can find something for anybody. Just give yourself plenty of time. There is a lot to look at.

When Pigs Fly Review by Edward Palania (04-05-2007)
Words cannot express just how insanely unique this shop is. You walk in the door and are instantly assaulted by a ton of the most out of this world crazy and unusual knick knacks you have ever seen. It is a visual feast and more eye candy then you will ever see in one place. I walked around the shop several times and still did not see everything. Its guaranteed you will laugh hysterically and be awestruck by the wide selection of gift items. You must check this place out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bridgetown Cafe Review by Jesse (04-04-2007)
Great little retro lounge like coffee shop, centrally located, and amazing local roasted fresh coffee & espresso. There isn't really an image you'll get coming into the shop...in fact every time I go, it has different clientle. Gabriels bakery is in the same building so they get all of their pastries fresh daily from them. The owner is Kari and she's very funny, genuine gal who's strangely informative about Portland (ask her about her favorite anything, and she'll tell you). All the staff seem to know what they are doing and I find their honest/consistent service refreshing. It's a gem of a coffee shop. I suggest visiting it and bring your computer for the FREE WIFI.

Sultan Cafe Review by David (04-02-2007)
They have a GREAT latte ....If you get there before 10am it is only 1.99! And Big Mike is known for his daily specials if you want to make your taste buds freak out. Anyway I give it a 9.0 - 9.5 for overall experience. I don't smoke Hookah, but it has become quite the hang out at night.

Pravda Review by David (03-30-2007)
Starting from the complementary drink, to the focused attention on me as a customer and really listening to me...this is the place. They have extensive training and understand how to treat a customer! The only thing that might be a problem is that there are stairs to climb if you are not able.

Sunlan Lighting Review by David (03-29-2007)
Some people build a business on filling a nitch. Well this should be in the business 101 in a college course as a example. Some lights you buy old, and new it can be almost impossible to find a bulb when they burn out! If ANYBODY can help the woman that owns this place can. She is also a old soul type of woman her advice in life is free...

Bernies Southern Bistro Review by David (03-27-2007)
NOW...I have had southern food. Hell I married a southern girl! So when we are in the mood to go south with our palate, Bernie's is the stop. Their greens are on the money, and the fried pickles are as good as it is going to get. Chicken was good, and the owners name is Kelly she has always been nice. Of course I tell her each time I drive to come here. That will get you service. One thing thou.. don't take the fried pickles the go for later, the don't keep!

P.S. summer time is a treat like back home, Kelly will serve you out back on the deck...nice too with heaters when it gets cool and no bugs!

Siam Society Review by David (03-27-2007)
There's a old saying don't judge a book by it's cover...That as we all know goes both ways. Siam happens to look cool as hell, but as we know often that can be the best part of the dinner. Well the night I went it had the atmosphere and great food. I happen to like the industrial look, but I know that is personal. When it comes to thai food I am all about the sauces. To me that is the foundation of thai from the peanut to the panang. Nobody had to tell them that. I would tell a friend for sure, probably better to take them...

Tour de Crepes Review by jen (03-17-2007)
You can't beat Portland for morning happy hour. Yeah you heard it right happy hour from 9-10 am!!! Mimosas are only $4.50 & they are deeeee-lish. This morning the staff "talked me into" trying the sparkling raspberry lime drink. Champagne+lime syrup+frozen raspberries. YUM-O!

Oh yeah, the crepes are great too :)

The Tin Shed Review by Mae R. (03-13-2007)
Breakfast is some of my favorite food... and I know I'm not alone as I've probably stood behind half of Portland one Sunday or other waiting for the highly coveted booth. Well let me tell you, if Tin Shed isn't already one of your regulars... good, one less person to wait behind... just kidding... its damn good breakfast. Its where you go when you want to break the hash brown routine and mix it up with a little grits and maybe get down with a potato pancake or two. Also, should you be out on a doggy date, and want to impress your four-legged friend, you can order off the "dog menu"... yes, thats what I said, I guess you'll just have to go check it out for yourself.

Fruition Review by Jeremy (03-01-2007)
This place reminds me of my many days spent in Europe. An excellent cup of organic coffee and a nosh. Maybe a glass of wine with some cheese. Really interesting art that tends to rotate on a monthly basis. The music is always comforting.
My French grandmother would feel right at home here!

redbird studio Review by Gary (02-06-2007)
Diggable screen printed threads and radically illustrated cards for almost any occasion. Not to mention the folks who own and run the shop are suppa duppa cool too.
