The Beaumont - Wilshire neighborhood has blossomed into one of the Rose City's most desirable areas, offering a diverse mix of classic Tudors, postwar Bungalows, and regal Old Portland homes with city views. The north end of the neighborhood features Wilshire Park and its 15 acres of full-canopied mature trees, playgrounds, and picnic facilities. The Beaumont subdivision was created in 1910. Beaumont means "beautiful mountain" in French, as much of the neighborhood sits along Alameda Ridge. Landmarks in the area include the architecturally unique Dutch Village building, Northeast 42ND Avenue and Fremont Street, the Oregon Stamp Society, 4828 NE 33RD Ave., and two homes on the National Historic Register of Historic Places: the Frank C. Barnes House, 3533 NE Klickitat St., and the Zimmerman-Rudeen House, 3425 NE Beakey St. The Beaumont-Wilshire neighborhood, with its infamous Klickitat Street, also figures prominently alongside Ramona the Pest, Henry Huggins and other beloved characters in the fictional world of children's author Beverly Cleary. Northeast Fremont Street, between NE 15th and 57th Avenues spans the Alameda-Irvington and Beaumont-Wilshire neighborhoods which serve as the focal point of activity.
